Joe Paterno: He Should Have Done More
By Bill Littlefield | Saturday, January 28th, 2012
Listen

Joe Paterno, pictured here in 1971, said shortly before his death that he "should have done more" about the allegations against Jerry Sandusky. (AP)

This week, members of the Penn State community paid their respects to the fellow who had been the head coach of the football team there for 46 years.

The presence and achievements of Joe Paterno, who died on Sunday at 85, inspired long lines of students, football players, former football players, and many others to walk past the former coach’s casket on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday. The third day of mourning found thousands of people at a public service held in the Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State’s basketball arena.

Joe Paterno was revered at Penn State, and his legacy beyond the university was significant. People who love college football would refer to Paterno when they were trying to convince naysayers that the college sports business wasn’t entirely corrupt. Joe Paterno’s teams won 409 of 548 games, 24 of 37 bowls, and two national championships, and most of his players graduated.

Joe Paterno was a generous benefactor of the university, and though it’s fair to say he could afford to be, lots of people who can afford to give generously don’t.

So it is ironic that when his coaching career came to an end as a result of allegations that former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually assaulted children, Joe Paterno said “I should have done more.”

In part because neither Joe Paterno nor anyone else in a position of authority at Penn State did more when a graduate assistant told Paterno in 2002 that Sandusky had raped a child in the showers in a Penn State locker room, Joe Paterno was fired in November. The more significant result of that multiple failure to do more was that for almost another decade, Jerry Sandusky was free to continue doing what he has allegedly done to more children.

It is impossible to imagine that Coach Paterno, Penn State former Athletic Director Tim Curley, and former University President Graham Spanier weren’t thinking of the impact the news about Sandusky’s alleged criminal acts would have on the football program and the university when they decided, ten years ago, not to do more.

Sports Illustrated columnist Joe Posnanski is writing a biography of Joe Paterno. He reported this week that shortly before he died, Paterno said of the children whom Jerry Sandusky allegedly abused, “I hope the victims find peace.” But if Joe Paterno and the others with the power to “do more” when they were told of Sandusky’s alleged crimes had acted ten years ago, some of those alleged victims looking for peace would never have become alleged victims. No individual coach’s legacy and no football program’s reputation mean much against that sad fact.

Coach Paterno was charged with coaching a football team. He did that very well. He took that much further just as you referenced earlier in your article. To write such an article with such poor timing shows what poor character you have and that you care more about creating media “buzz” than you do about showing respect and compassion for his family. The thousands of players that learned from him and moved forward to become great citizens are his legacy and the 60 years that he served doing this cannot be overshadowed by his inability to manage SOMEONE ELSE’S crime. I do not condone or dismiss his handling of the situation, however that situation does not define him. This article however will define your pathetic career as a writer and I hope it is the last one that comes across my phone.

Thank you . Very well said.

Not an appropriate end to this man’s career and life.

  • Jaqueljones

Find something new to write about. I mean how many times can you write the same story? Everyone’s heard this Paternity should have done more, so why don’t you do the same? Do more and find something new to write about.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dubyac99 Bill Collins

I believe it’s “Paterno.” Let’s not get that subject mixed in here.  Jerry impregnated not one person his entire life.  Don’t get it twisted.

It makes me sad (and hurt) how the inner anger of individuals like Littlefield comes out in something like this.  Inner anger as in a spitefullness towards things and people that may have occurred in their lives, now seeking avenues to thrust the hate on those that do not deserve it.

The biggest point is the absolute ambiguity in how they speak, thus doing so to enhance their hateful presentations.    Example being how they blandly state things like ‘Joe did a lot of good things’ but…. then get into graphic detail about an act and try as hard as they can to pull a person ‘involved’ in as essentially the doer of the act.

It is total hatred spewed out in one big blast, of which they would never do of their own family or heroes.  Those people are the worst at making excuses as they play godlike pick and choose from person to person.  Attempted muder cover up?  Tell me who is accussed first, they will ask.  Being because, if it is a person they admired, the twisting and turning will begin.  If they disliked them in the first place, they will be the judge jury and moral executioner if they could- never willing to reveal their own lifes incidents if possible.

Paterno was never told a child was “raped.” Read the facts of the case before you write a story about it.

    • Anonymous

I read the facts.  Paterno was told of “something sexual” being done to a young boy. That’s according to his own testimony.

You Paterno apologists are so desperate that you will grab onto anything.  Just because Paterno wasn’t told of “rape,” but only “fondling or something sexual”, you think that’s some sort of vindication.  It’s not.

      • stophatin

Funny, Colin didn’t defend anything, nor did he claim some vindication.  Colin simply pointed out that the story was inaccurate regarding the word rape.  And, ironically, you are inaccurate in your lazy and hater attack on Colin’s accurate criticism.

        • http://www.facebook.com/dubyac99 Bill Collins

Sorry, Colin was pointing it out to protect Joe, not as a “sky is blue” revelation.  Use some common sense.

  • Teamed21234

I am disappointed in Bill Littlefield.  I just turned-off my local NPR station because, today, I find you neither entertaining nor insightful.  The Sandusky Scandal is appalling but I would wait until Sandusky’s trial before I would assume any media report as ‘fact.’

  • Katlangan

I have a really a hard time, when I think about how many influential people Joe paterno knew. He had so much power that he could stopped Sandusky. Don’t give me this I contacted my supervisors crap or I didn’t knew/understand raping of boys. He is a practicing Catholic and doesn’t know about sexual abuse/scandal.

Sandusky was accused in 1998 while working on Coaching team of sexual abuse. No charges were filed. Then a year later 1999 he retires at 55…..with a great career to devote more time with his charity. And no one questions this? Then 2002 the case that we are know talking about happens!

    • http://www.facebook.com/dubyac99 Bill Collins

Yes, something was specifically covered up here. Joe Paterno is very meticulous, and thoughtful. There’s no way his “right hand man” and assistant coach Jerry Sandusky resigned in 1999, and nothing ever came from it. No offers were publicized, no inquiries, save a few interviews, etc.  Jerry’s trouble in 1998 was definitely tied to the 1999 “retirement.”  Joe may have been aware, but put in a position to not ask a lot of questions. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was contained to a few hushed conversations, and Joe was kept out of the loop. Some action was created to make it a hush-hush topic. I’m sure Joe pushed, but got no cooperation in discussion of the topic, or for legal reasons, he was not allowed to know of it (which would be my guess.)    See the next paragraph for another reason, Joe Paterno may not have been knocking down doors for answers.  That seems to be the indication.  2002 was a different story, and again, Joe Paterno and many others acted in a way that seems to “condone” Jerry’s behavior,” but in fact, is quite typical in Child Molest cases, and why Child molesters continue to get away with it. It’s an icky topic that most do not want to address.

Sex, in any subject, is something that makes many uncomfortable.  Add illegal acts, like Child Molestation, and the topic becomes even more deplorable.  Joe Paterno’s behavior, and many others like Mike McQueary in this case, is expected and not surprising to those who’ve studied this topic, or experienced it in some other way.  I work in an office setting.  When I’m in the office, and a “yucky file” comes my way, what do I do?, I put it at the bottom of my priority list. It’s the natural thing, that most humans would do.  Why? We hate confrontation, we hate trouble, we hate making “decisions” that might affect somebody’s livelihood, etc.  We realize, as humans, that accusing somebody of “Child Molestation” is a serious accusation!  And we don’t want to “ruin” somebody’s life, especially a friend or colleague, somebody we respect, so we push away the “icky priority.” and use “selective memory” to erase it from our mind.  It’s not easy, but it’s easier than confronting the issue.  As humans, we might also, look at this situation that’s being laid out nicely for us in these articles and readings, and want to do the right thing (in our mind!) so we express outrage, and what we “would do,” and what “he should do” and other “hero” wishes.  The truth is, we don’t know exactly what we we would do.  There’s no way to compare this to reality.  Most of us will never experience “exactly” what Mike Mc Queary and Joe Paterno were up against, ever in our lifetime.  Therefore it is not fair to compare it in this way.  We’ve compassion for the victims, as do 99.99999% of everyone in these cases. But the scenario laid out is very typical, and quite often the results are similar or the same.  It is outrageous!  It is despicable!  It is a tragedy!  Let’s enact laws and guidelines to change this! Let’s protect our children!

It’s well known why Sandusky retired. Paterno told him in 1998  that he would not become head coach because he spent too much time on his charity, and head coach required all a person’s time.

Sandusky could have said he would resign from his charity work and devote full time to coaching, but he decided instead to retire and devote more time to the charity.

After he retired, Sandusky was offered a head coaching job at U. of Va, but did not accept it.

I feel all your pain I really do! I have admired JoePa for the past five decades. Yes, I’m that old! LoL

Everybody is all over the place as regards Shower 2002. But the reality of the situation is really all about one day in March of 2002. One day in which two people interacted with one another to the exclusion basically of the entire outside world. During that one day no alumni, no Board of Trustees, no police, no Child Protective Services, no District Attorney where made aware, knew about Shower 2002. And it is about Shower 2002 that I have concentrated my interest. An interest without any preconceived assumptions, bias, or over the top emotionalism.

Again I, like yourselves, have always admired, praised JoePa. But his role in the incident I call Shower 2002 was even more critical, more prominent, more serious than all of the rest who were involved. Why?  How?  Based on recorded testimony from Joe Paterno and Mike McQueary in two separate court hearings, the evidence and the facts, both circumstantial and direct, screams out the following observations! Screams out the following conclusions!

Despite his emotionally paralyzed condition as a result of Shower 2002, McQueary went to the one man he relied upon to provide the proper council, the understanding, the right direction. It was Joe Paterno who then proudly announced to the redhead that he had done the right thing and now let him, JoePa, take care of the reporting of the whole incident to others. Paterno was going to take care of everything to the relief of McQueary and his Father. And Joe Paterno had one and only one option on March 2, 2002. To have McQueary report Sandusky immediately to the police. Without hesitation! Period! End of paragraph!

Why? Because in Shower 2002, there was reasonable doubt that Sandusky was acting properly and decently with the little boy. And when that kind of reasonable doubt occurs, an American citizen — a human being — is mandated by law, moral and legal, to report any act such as an alleged child molestation. Immediately, without hesitation!

Call it “fondling,” “touching,” caressing,” or “horseplay,” a naked male adult with a naked minor in a closed, private, university gymnasium on a Friday night constitutes reasonable doubt as to the appropriateness of that adult’s behavior. Period! In this kind of situation, even if one has to err, one always errs on the side of safety — a child’s safety.

But JoePa did a curious thing upon that meeting with the graduate coach.. Unbelievably, McQueary, the absolute most important person in this whole story, the witness to the alleged sexual assault of a little boy, was dismissed by Paterno. He and his father were, in effect, sent home! Amazingly, that single action, all by itself, now made Joe Paterno the primary figure, the guidance director of this whole affair. He had placed himself squarely in the middle of this tragic story. He transformed himself into a new witness — by himself, for himself.

And Paterno then spent an additional day perusing, contemplating what to do about an event that was 1) none of his immediate concern; 2) an alleged horrific crime that was not a chain of command issue; 3) an episode he personally had not witnessed. But alas, Paterno was now McQueary’s surrogate. Again, a role he himself had instantaneously set up — for himself, by himself.

Delaying the reporting of the crime for 24 hours caused yet another ethical problem for JoePa. In order to be the self created orchestrator of this filthy revelation, Paterno consciously excluded the victim child from any consideration. That is exactly what he did. He trivialize the victim child by making him invisible, ignored, and nonexistent! Exactly what McQueary and his father had done the night before! The most important figure in this sordid affair became the most unimportant! JoePa forgot, gave up all concern for the little boy‘s safety!

Again, JoePa, by this action, had made himself immediately a surrogate witness, made himself in charge of describing what occurred in the shower, made himself the sole disseminator of information, and made himself the sole decider as to whom would know of this incident.

Paterno hesitated to do the right action. Why? Because the image of Sandusky instantly replaced the image of the little boy. And please, this was not an act of sexual harassment that could be delayed for evidence to be collected later. This was a shower room activity that was, well, like when there is a fire. You either throw water on it, or call 911, or do both. But in either case, you act immediately without hesitation. Immediately without hesitation! Immediately without hesitation!

When Joe Paterno and Mike McQueary failed to act, immediately and without hesitation, the fire burned for the next nine years.

You mention erring on the side of safety.

The University Police, State College Police, Centre County DA’s Office, Centre County child pretective services, PA Dept. of Public Welfare and Second Mile all knew in 1998 that Sandusky bear-hugged boys in the campus showers, and did nothing to stop him from doing it again.

Even if McQueary had called the police in 2002, those same groups may have done nothing again because all McQueary actually witnessed was Sandusky bear-hugging a boy in the shower.

        Tim

        My, oh my, oh my!

You: “The University Police, State College Police, Centre County DA’s Office, Centre County child protective services, PA Dept. of Public Welfare and Second Mile all knew in 1998 that Sandusky bear-hugged boys in the campus showers, and did nothing to stop him from doing it again.”

Me: Absolutely true and right on Tim.   And what you state is absolutely irrelevant to the lack of action and response by McQueary and Paterno in Shower 2002. What happened that evening was a new event captured by an actual eye witness. Calling 911 was an action that was not dependent on anything that did or did not happen in 1998.   Pleeeease!

You: “Even if McQueary had called the police in 2002, those same groups may have done nothing again because all McQueary actually witnessed was Sandusky bear-hugging a boy in the shower. “

Me: The judgment you just made, aside from being amazingly juvenile and idiotic, is neither yours nor mine to make! If there is a fire, you put it out or dial 911, immediately without hesitation! You don’t never ever (double negative) first consider the fire’s cause, whose responsible, or if the local fire department is capable and efficient of dealing with the situation. You get help immediately without hesitation! Geeeeze!

It seems to me that Penn State and Paterno were libeled by a false Grand Jury report. McQueary testified at the preliminary hearing that he never use incendiary terms like “anal intercourse” and “anal rape” attributed to him in the Grand Jury report. All McQueary actually witnessed was Sandusky bear-hugging a boy from behind in the showers.

He only suspected that there was sexual contact.

The Grand Jury report also omitted the testimony of Dr.Dranov, who asked
McQueary 3 times if he saw anything sexual, and three times McQueary
said no. At the preliminary hearing, the prosecution objected repeatedly to keep McQueary from answering questions about what he told Dr. Dranov.

I think the bigger scandal may turn out to be prosecutor misconduct by
the Attorney General’s office, which may even involve the current PA
governor, who was the previous Attorney General.

Tim, thank you for your response.

Your assumption here is totally and completely  irrelevant to what should have been done by Paterno and McQueary during the 24 lour period in question.  Geeeeeze!

You too are completely forgetting about the victim child.  It’s not your place to judge what happened in that shower room.  Nevertheless, it is very definitely  your place, had you been there, to call 911, immediately without hesitation.  Geeeeeze!

read this article, written by someone who actually understands human behavior.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-yvonne-k-fulbright/countering-the-criticism-_b_1236723.html  And by the way, he said he “WISHED” he had done more, not “should.”  Big difference, try getting your facts straight for once.

      Mr Guest

After Fulbright’s article, read mine on this forum.  I think you will discover the enormous gaps in her analysis.  She simply doesn’t understand the basis of opinion from the millions across the country who have condemned JoePa’s misbehavior.

    Tim! Tim! Tim!Tim Beeeeeerton!

Your priceless and your social rationalizations should be a part of every university ethics curriculum. Tim you would become famous (or infamous). I’m thinking about kids and their protection, their safety here.   A you are thinking about is syntax and grammar. For instance…….

You: “All McQueary actually witnessed was Sandusky bear-hugging a boy from behind in the showers. He only suspected that there was sexual contact.” Arrrrrrrrhhh!

Sigh, me: Call it “fondling,” “touching,” caressing,” or “horseplay,” a naked male adult with a naked minor in a closed, privat, university gymnasium on a Friday night constitutes reasonable doubt as to the appropriateness of that adult’s behavior. Period! End of paragraph!

Tim, this scene is not for you to judge. Not even for McQueary to judge. You dial 911 and let professional authority make the evaluation. Period, end of paragraph.

You: “The Grand Jury report also omitted the testimony of Dr.Dranov, who asked McQueary 3 times if he saw anything sexual, and three times McQueary said no.”

Me: How despicable and unprofessional was the mysterious Dr. Dranov. On the job, by law, he is mandated to report even the suspicion of abuse upon a minor. He can be confused, unsure, bewildered, but it is not his role to ascertain or evaluate abuse, only to report it.Now this man was despicable and unprofessional upon his approach to the obviously very distraught and very dismayed McQueary. He wasn’t there, he wasn’t an witness, but he took it upon himself to convince the redhead that perhaps he was all wrong about what he saw1  Amazing!   Unconscionable!   He had no right to do this.   And fortunately, McQueary held strong in the preliminary hearing. He too, Tim, like yourself, completely forgot all about the child.

Finally, you: “I think the bigger scandal may turn out to be prosecutor misconduct by the Attorney General’s office, which may even involve the current PA governor, who was the previous Attorney General.”

Finally, me: May be true but this is totally irrelevant to the judgment of two people that 24 hour period in March of 2002.   Zounds!
