It’s been more than a decade since Michael “His Airness” Jordan left the Chicago Bulls. Now Derrick Rose and the Bulls are making their own run at the NBA championship. the sportswriter interviewed in this piece displays typical american arrogance and ignorance. to declare a team that won six titles in eight years as “the best sports team ever” is pure bunk. real madrid has won nine european competitions (including five in a row in the 50s and 60s) and 34 domestic league titles. or what of fc barcelona, who won an unprecedented six trophies in the space of a year to go along with two previous european titles and 20 domestic league titles. the bulls of yore was indeed an amazing squad. but until any american professional sports team wins a competition comprising the champions of the other continents — as both madrid and barcelona have done — i scoff at the title “world champions” let alone best sports team ever.

Yea, but honestly, who the hell cares?

      • DAN

    DAN-
I agree with you that American sports writers are prone to hyperbole, that US sports fans don’t really understand what “dynasty” means, and that in some cases the term “World Champion” is a stretch, but nowhere in Alex Keefe’s Bulls story does anyone (not even the hyperbolic Chicago sports writer Sam Smith) say that the Bulls were “the best sports team ever”. Each time a championship is referred to, the term “NBA” is used, or it’s unmodified, implying that the chamionship in question is limited to the NBA.
Sounds to me like you’re a socc…um…a FOOTBALL fan who’s just dying to get on that soapbox. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I’m just saying…
Just speculation, but I don’t think that any national hoops team would ever have beaten the Jordan Bulls in their prime. We’ll never know, of course, but still.

    Thanks for listening to OAG!
