musicnote1OAG Senior Producer Gary Waleik writes about his musical selections for this week’s program.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by The Boston Ballet Orchestra (from the Selection’s from The Nutcracker, BBO Records, 1995)

Gary’s take: I love the scene where Clara proves the Unified Field Theory…

The Little Christmas Tree by Nat King Cole (from Christmas for Kids from One to Ninety-Two, Capitol, 2000)

Gary’s take: Nat could wassail with the very best of them. Here’s proof.

God’s Footballer by Billy Bragg (from Don’t Try This at Home, Elektra, 1991)

Gary’s take: Just a wonderful song…I don’t know what to say beyond that.

Fidelity Fiduciary Bank (from Mary Poppins Original Soundtrack, Walt Disney Records, 1997)

Gary’s take: Any truth the rumor that the CEOs of all bailout recipients received this CD? They should have.

O Tannenbaum by John Hart (from Yule Struttin’: A Blue Note Christmas, Blue Note, 1990)

Gary’s take: For those suffering from Guaralditoxicosis (also known as overexposure to A Charlie Brown Christmas).

In reverse herse curse (dead hand prose at 4am):

-O Royal Tannenbaums: For those lucky enough to work for Public Radio and live in a posh suburb, have kids talented and bright enough to go to the best schools…and then have to come home all b/c their significant relative claims to have a terminal sickness..
Makes me wonder if my being cursed enough to have jack shitte for a job and live next to a secondary hwy. (statistically proven to increase major illnesses) is my own damn fault, or some consolation that once the children leave home, they will be smarter never looking back-wahh!
Well, I ain’t Wes Wilson (The Aquatic Life, in which Bill Murray hunts a fish that killed his friend), but why did I write O Tannenbaum…oh, my fat ego..there are thousands of John Harts… I wonder if they all got teased..”the big fat f–t”ad insicknitum.
-”You” Albert Finney, from the movie ‘Scrooge’(1971). I usually play this vid. every fall after Halloween, b/c the ghosts and effects used to scare the crap outa me, but now I save it til’ mid-winter, knowing what a great actor Albert Finney is, even though he has too often been cast into roles of the soon departed, or worse. The song ‘You’ is actually a 3 part sequence where he sees his beloved fall in with him, then out of love with him, and he, alas, alone. Dickens was a four letter word with my heart…it is scathing, wonderously burning, yet gentle as it sets out what I fear most-of dying-at the same point of showing what it means to live w.o living….sigh-I need Charlie Brown, sometimes, for a gas off!
-Power In The Darkness: Tom Robinson Band (T.R.B)-E.M.I, 1977. Two chords and the truth-that pre-dated, and in my mind, should have devastated Bono and his macho buddy nacho echo rosetta bonehead.
-The Little Drummer Girl-Joan Jett..ain’t no doubt about which side of the skins she beats on!
-The Slutcracker: Original Burlesque Rewrite of a horrendously homogeneous…or was that originally skim white wholesome production. Anyways, I’m writing well after 2010, so you needen’t carry protection…it’s over til’ Xmas 12..keep clean til’ then!!
