Author Bruce Weber takes a hands-on examination of baseball umpires in his book “As They See ‘Em: A Fan’s Travels in the Land of Umpires.” In addition to talking with umpires of every level he also goes through umpire school and spring training to study the profession. Bill Littlefield reviews Weber’s work in “As They See ‘Em.”
Curt Schilling Retires
On Tuesday Curt Schilling blogged the news: He was retiring from baseball. Schilling helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and again in 2007. He was still employed by the team last season, to the tune of eight million dollars, though he did not pitch. Commentator Bill Littlefield reviews Curt Schilling’s Boston days.

Heart of a Husky
The University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team has been perfect this season and is the clear favorite as they enter the NCAA tournament. Mel Thomas, a former player at UConn under head coach Gino Auriemma, probably wishes she was still there. Thomas, who is now playing professionally in Ireland, wrote about her experience at Connecticut in “Heart of a Husky.” Bill Littlefield reviews her book.
March Marking Period
On Thursday the men’s NCAA basketball tournament will get underway. Remembering that the “C” in NCAA stands for “collegiate,” commentator Bill Littlefield foresees some surprises.
